Catimor

Catimor is a cross between Caturra and the Timor Hybrid, first made in Portugal in 1959. The Timor Hybrid parent, itself a natural Arabica-Robusta cross, supplies strong resistance to coffee leaf rust, while Caturra contributes compact stature and productivity. The combination spread across Asia and Latin America as the backbone of national disease-resistance programmes, and it reaches very high yields of good quality between about 600 and 1,600 metres. Cup quality is altitude-dependent, running clean and balanced on high ground but turning astringent at low elevations. Its resistance to rust is high and its tolerance of coffee berry disease moderate, though breeders warn that the rust protection may erode as new pathogen races emerge. Catimor's agronomic value lies in securing harvests where unimproved Arabicas could not survive.
