Bourbon

Bourbon is one of the two foundational Arabica cultivars, alongside Typica, and traces its origin to the island of Reunion, formerly Ile Bourbon, where trees were raised from Yemeni seed in the early eighteenth century. From there it spread through Latin America and East Africa to become a genetic cornerstone of modern coffee. The variety produces roughly 20 to 30 percent more fruit than Typica and is valued for a complex sweetness, balanced acidity and full body that place its quality among the finest. It performs best between about 1,000 and 2,000 metres, at medium yields. Against that quality stands a serious weakness: Bourbon is highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease and carries little nematode resistance, so shade or chemical management is essential in rust-prone regions.
