About
Bourbon is one of the two foundational Arabica cultivars, originating on the island of Reunion (formerly Ile Bourbon) from seeds brought from Yemen in the early 18th century. It is prized for its complex sweetness, balanced acidity, and rich body. Bourbon produces about 20-30% more fruit than Typica but remains susceptible to major coffee diseases.
Disease Resistance
Highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) and coffee berry disease (Colletotrichum kahawae). Low nematode resistance. Bourbon's description notes disease vulnerability; chemical or shade management required in rust-prone regions.
