Kapeng Barako, literally strong man's coffee in Filipino, is a cultural designation for the traditional Liberica preparation of the Philippines. Although it overlaps genetically with Barako, the term specifically evokes the robust, full-bodied brewing tradition of the Batangas region. The cup is intensely aromatic, carrying a jackfruit-like fragrance, a smoky flavour and a thick, syrupy mouthfeel. As a Liberica variety it yields moderately at good quality in the lowlands below about 800 metres, and it is susceptible to coffee leaf rust; the Hemileia vastatrix epidemic of the 1880s devastated Philippine exports and Liberica plantings alike. Present-day production is small in scale and depends on traditional management practices, keeping the variety alive as much for its cultural resonance as for its commercial output.
