F1 Hybrids are first-generation crosses between genetically distant Arabica parents, engineered to capture hybrid vigour, or heterosis, alongside disease resistance and superior cup quality. Developed by CIRAD, World Coffee Research and national institutes, the group includes named varieties such as Centroamericano and Starmaya. These hybrids can outperform both parents in yield and quality, reaching very high yields at excellent quality between roughly 1,000 and 1,800 metres. The named F1 varieties draw strong resistance to coffee leaf rust from Sarchimor and Timor Hybrid ancestry, and their vigour improves overall plant health. Their historical limitation was propagation: they traditionally required vegetative cloning, which constrained adoption until recent seed-based innovations. Breeders continue to monitor how well resistance holds across planting generations, since hybrid uniformity does not persist beyond the first cross.
