Fair Trade Certified
A certification system that guarantees coffee producers receive a minimum price floor and a social premium above market rates. Fair Trade also mandates democratic cooperative governance and environmental standards.

Administered by Fairtrade International (FLO) and Fair Trade USA, the certification sets a floor price (currently $1.80/lb for washed Arabica, $2.10/lb organic) and adds a $0.20/lb community development premium. Cooperatives vote on how to use the premium—common investments include schools, healthcare, and infrastructure. Critics argue the floor price is too low to cover modern production costs, that certification fees burden small cooperatives, and that the quality incentive is weak since all qualifying coffee receives the same minimum. Despite limitations, Fair Trade remains the most recognized ethical certification among consumers.
