Villa Sarchi

Villa Sarchi is a natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon found near the town of Sarchi in Costa Rica's West Valley. Well adapted to high altitudes and windy conditions, it is popular among Costa Rican smallholders and yields moderately at very good quality between about 1,200 and 1,800 metres. The cup is bright and complex, with pronounced citric acidity, a fruity sweetness and a clean finish. Its wind tolerance, however, has no bearing on disease resistance: as a natural Bourbon mutation it is susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease, and growers rely on fungicides and habitat above 1,200 metres to manage rust. Villa Sarchi also carries wider significance as a parent of Sarchimor, through which its Costa Rican Bourbon genetics entered many modern disease-resistant varieties.
