Ateng is the Acehnese name for the Catimor-type varieties that dominate Sumatra's Gayo Highlands. Introduced to Indonesia during the disease-resistance programmes of the 1980s, it replaced Typica populations that rust had devastated and went on to become one of Sumatra's most widely planted coffees. Its Catimor genetics, drawn from the Timor Hybrid, give it high resistance to coffee leaf rust, the trait that drove its adoption. Processed by the traditional Giling Basah (wet-hulled) method, Ateng produces a heavy-bodied cup with the earthy, herbal and spicy character that defines Sumatran coffee. The variety yields well and reaches good quality across an altitude band of about 800 to 1,500 metres, making it a practical mainstay of smallholder production in Aceh.
