Obata is a Sarchimor-derived variety selected by Brazil's Instituto Agronomico de Campinas and named after a city in Sao Paulo state. It stands out for combining excellent yield with unusually broad protection, carrying strong resistance to coffee leaf rust, moderate resistance to bacterial halo blight and partial resistance to root-knot nematodes, which makes it one of Brazil's most comprehensively defended commercial Arabicas. The cup is clean and balanced, with moderate acidity and nutty-chocolate notes, produced at very high yields and good quality between about 600 and 1,400 metres. Its multi-disease profile suits it to commercial production where several pathogens threaten the crop at once. Obata reflects the Brazilian breeding priority of agronomic security and reliable volume rather than the pursuit of the highest specialty scores.
