Ruiru 11 is a compact F1 hybrid released by Kenya's Coffee Research Institute in 1985 and named for the town of Ruiru where it was developed. Its breeders combined genetics from Rume Sudan, K7, SL28, SL34 and the Timor Hybrid to build broad resistance to both coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust, protection that has remained broadly effective. The variety yields heavily at good quality between roughly 1,200 and 1,900 metres. Early plantings drew criticism for cup quality below that of SL28 and SL34, but improved selections have narrowed the gap considerably. Ruiru 11 gave Kenyan growers a disease-protected, compact plant at a time when the celebrated SL varieties were suffering heavy losses, and its multi-source resistance later informed the development of Batian.
