Selected from the Mundo Novo population by Brazil's Instituto Agronomico de Campinas, Acaia is an Arabica cultivar distinguished by its unusually large bean size. It retains the vigour and productivity of its Mundo Novo parent while yielding a marginally cleaner cup. Cultivation concentrates in the Brazilian cerrado, where the variety's drought tolerance suits the region's dry season, though that tolerance offers no protection against pathogens. Acaia belongs to the wider Bourbon lineage and produces high yields of good cup quality across an altitude band of roughly 800 to 1,400 metres. In the cup it reads smooth and low in acidity, with a nutty sweetness typical of Brazilian naturals. Like other Mundo Novo derivatives it remains susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease, so growers rely on routine fungicide management.
