Visão Geral

Bergendal is one of the last surviving pre-rust Typica populations in Indonesia, named for a colonial-era plantation. Its trees are exceedingly rare, having escaped the leaf rust epidemics of the 1880s that destroyed almost all Indonesian Arabica, and the remnant is prized by specialty buyers for both its historic genetics and its cup. That cup is clean and delicate, carrying floral and citrus notes across a low-yielding but very good quality profile. The variety grows between about 1,000 and 1,600 metres. As an unimproved Typica it is highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust, and any cultivation demands intensive disease management; the surviving trees represent a fortunate escape rather than any inherited resistance, which is much of what makes them valuable to growers preserving Indonesia's pre-epidemic lineages.
