Typica is the genetic foundation of most commercially grown Arabica cultivars, tracing its lineage to a single plant brought from Yemen to the Malabar coast of India in the 1600s and then to the Dutch colony of Java. It produces relatively low yields but is revered for exceptional cup quality. Typica coffees are characteristically clean and sweet, with elegant acidity, pronounced floral aromatics, and a silky body.

Highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease. Low nematode resistance. The 1869 Sri Lanka rust epidemic destroyed vast Typica plantations. Chemical treatment or shade management required in rust-prone regions.
