Ikhtisar

Mokka, sometimes written Mocha, is among the smallest-bean Arabica cultivars, named for the historic Yemeni port of Al Mokha through which coffee was first traded. The tiny beans concentrate flavour during roasting, giving a richly chocolatey cup with deep winey notes, berry-like acidity and a smooth, velvety body that lent its name to chocolate-coffee pairings. Yields are low and quality is rated excellent, with cultivation between roughly 1,200 and 1,800 metres. As a traditional Arabica it is susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease, though published data specific to the variety is limited and Yemen's semi-arid climate historically provided natural disease suppression. Mokka's long association with the earliest coffee trade gives it a heritage standing that its distinctive small beans and concentrated cup continue to reinforce.
