Jember is a Typica selection distributed from the coffee research centre at Jember in East Java, and it counts among the oldest cultivated Arabica lineages in Indonesia, tracing back to the original Dutch colonial plantations. It yields moderately at very good quality between about 900 and 1,600 metres, giving a clean, bright cup with medium body and gentle sweetness. The variety is now increasingly rare as farmers move toward higher-yielding, disease-resistant cultivars. As a Typica derivative it is susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease, and the 1880s epidemics nearly eliminated its ancestor population; the same disease pressure that once threatened it now drives its replacement by resistant varieties such as Ateng and Kawisari. Jember survives chiefly on heritage estates that value its traditional profile.
