Java is one of the oldest Arabica cultivars, descended from the Typica trees planted in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial era. The variety later travelled to Cameroon and other African countries, where a distinct selection under the name Java was developed and distributed. It yields moderately at good quality between roughly 900 and 1,600 metres, producing a clean cup with moderate acidity, herbal undertones and a sweet finish that reflects its Typica heritage. As a Typica derivative it is susceptible to coffee leaf rust, and the 1869 epidemic devastated the original Java plantations; modern selections in Cameroon are managed with fungicides, and some lines may carry modest local tolerance. Java's long history, spanning two continents and several centuries, makes it both a working cultivar and a link to the earliest spread of cultivated coffee.
