Icatu is a Brazilian hybrid descended from a cross between Robusta and Mundo Novo, backcrossed repeatedly to Arabica by the Instituto Agronomico de Campinas. The Robusta contribution brings disease resistance and vigour, while the repeated Arabica backcrossing preserves cup quality. Available in red and yellow cherry variants, Icatu is valued for adaptability and productivity, yielding heavily at good quality between about 600 and 1,400 metres and producing a full-bodied cup with moderate acidity. Its Robusta ancestry, introduced through the Mundo Novo crosses, gives good resistance to coffee leaf rust and broader disease tolerance than pure Arabica, though moderate susceptibility to coffee berry disease remains. The variety illustrates the interspecific approach to breeding, borrowing hardiness from canephora while keeping the flavour profile that Arabica buyers expect.
