A natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon, Caturra was first found in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the 1930s. Its compact size permits denser planting and easier harvesting, which made it commercially important throughout Latin America. Compared with its Bourbon parent it offers a brighter, more citric acidity and a lighter body, and it develops greater complexity at higher elevations. Caturra yields heavily at very good quality across roughly 800 to 1,700 metres. It gained none of its parent's disease weaknesses in reverse, remaining susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease, and its dense plantings can raise fungal pressure. Growers mitigate rust by planting above about 1,200 metres or applying fungicides. As a parent it also lies behind many modern cultivars, from Catimor to Castillo.
