Castillo was released by Cenicafe in Colombia in 2005, developed through multiple generations of crossing Caturra with Timor Hybrid and backcrossing to traditional varieties. Named after researcher Jaime Castillo Zapata, it combines comprehensive rust resistance with cup quality approaching that of traditional Colombian varieties. Castillo has become the most widely planted variety in Colombia.
