نظرة عامة

Castillo was released by Colombia's Cenicafe in 2005 after several generations of crossing Caturra with the Timor Hybrid and backcrossing toward traditional varieties. Named for the researcher Jaime Castillo Zapata, it pairs comprehensive resistance to every known Colombian rust race with cup quality close to that of the country's classic selections, and it has since become the most widely planted variety in Colombia. Its resistance has held durable since release, and it also shows moderate to good tolerance of coffee berry disease. Castillo yields heavily at very good quality across a broad altitude band of roughly 1,000 to 2,000 metres. Together with its predecessor, the Colombia variety, it anchors the national strategy of defending smallholder livelihoods against rust without abandoning the flavour that built Colombia's reputation.
