Bergendal is one of the few surviving pre-rust Typica populations in Indonesia, named after a colonial-era plantation. These ancient trees are extremely rare, having survived the devastating leaf rust epidemics of the late 1800s that wiped out most Indonesian Arabica. Bergendal is prized by specialty buyers for its historically significant genetics and clean, delicate cup with floral and citrus notes.

Highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust; the 1880s rust epidemics nearly destroyed all Indonesian Typica including Bergendal ancestors. Surviving trees represent a rare escaped remnant; intensive disease management required for any cultivation.
