Rume Sudan

Rume Sudan is an exceptionally rare wild Arabica collected from the Boma Plateau in what is now South Sudan, one of the few known wild coffee populations outside Ethiopia. Preserved at the CATIE germplasm collection in Costa Rica, it has been planted only by a handful of experimental farms. The cup is remarkably sweet and complex, carrying tropical fruit, brown sugar and a creamy body, and it is rated excellent at low yields between about 1,300 and 1,800 metres. Published data on its own disease resistance is limited, and its resistance level remains uncharacterised, but its unique wild genetics were used in breeding Centroamericano to contribute disease tolerance. Rume Sudan's importance lies chiefly in what its wild lineage can pass on to bred varieties rather than in any commercial planting of its own.
