Coffea canephora var. quillou is a wild Robusta native to Central Africa, especially the Congo Basin. It forms part of the broad genetic diversity within Coffea canephora that breeders have tapped for improvement, and Quillou-type populations tend to carry greater diversity than the cultivated clones grown for commodity Robusta. As a wild canephora it is highly resistant to coffee leaf rust and to most pathogens that specifically attack Arabica, which makes it valuable as a genetic reservoir for interspecific resistance breeding. The variety yields well at good quality in the lowlands, from sea level to around 700 metres. Its significance lies less in direct cultivation than in the traits its wild Congo Basin gene pool can contribute to future disease-resistant coffees developed from crosses with Arabica.
