Barako

Barako is the Filipino name for Liberica coffee, a species distinct from both Arabica and Robusta and deeply woven into the coffee culture of Batangas and Cavite. Once a major export crop, Philippine Liberica collapsed after coffee leaf rust struck in the late 1800s, and Barako has survived chiefly as a heritage crop maintained by local farmers. The trees tolerate low elevations below 800 metres and yield moderately, at good quality. In the cup Barako is unmistakably bold, carrying a smoky, woody character, floral and fruity undertones and a powerful aroma that sustains a devoted following. As a Liberica it shows some tolerance of pathogens that afflict Arabica, but it proved highly vulnerable to the rust epidemic whose damage the industry never fully recovered from.
