SL34
Overview
SL34 is a Scott Agricultural Laboratories selection derived from French Mission Bourbon stock and closely associated with SL28, though it performs better at higher elevations and in wetter conditions. The cup is similarly outstanding, with vibrant acidity, a heavy body and complex fruit notes spanning stone fruit, citrus and berry, and it is rated excellent at moderate yields between roughly 1,400 and 2,100 metres. Its superior altitude performance confers no disease protection: SL34 remains susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease, and Kenyan farmers manage it with copper-based fungicides and periodic pruning. Together with SL28 it forms the backbone of premium Kenyan lots, the two selections defining the intense, fruit-driven profile for which the country's coffee is internationally sought.
