Kona
Overview
Kona is the Typica-descended coffee grown in the Kona district on the western slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualalai on Hawaii's Big Island. Volcanic soil, afternoon cloud cover and mild temperatures combine to give a distinctive terroir, and the cup is prized for a clean, bright acidity, medium body and sweet flavour carrying notes of brown sugar, milk chocolate and light fruit. Yields are low and quality is rated excellent, with cultivation at the relatively modest elevations of about 200 to 800 metres. As a Typica derivative it is susceptible to coffee leaf rust and coffee berry disease; Hawaii's geographic isolation long offered natural protection, but rust has been present since the 1970s and is now managed with fungicide programmes. Its reputation rests on the unusual combination of island terroir and heritage genetics.
