Overview

Kent was first identified in the 1920s on the estate of L. P. Kent in Mysore, now Karnataka, in India. It ranked among the earliest cultivars selected specifically for partial resistance to coffee leaf rust, although that resistance has since broken down against modern strains. Today it is susceptible to both leaf rust and coffee berry disease. Kent remains grown in parts of India and Papua New Guinea, where it yields moderately at good quality between roughly 900 and 1,500 metres and produces a mild, clean cup with a light body and gentle acidity. Its historical significance lies in that early demonstration of selecting for rust tolerance, a strategy that later breeders would pursue far more systematically once single-gene resistance proved short-lived in the field.
