Tamper
A hand tool used to compress ground coffee evenly into the portafilter basket before espresso extraction. Proper tamping creates a uniform, level puck that promotes even water flow.

Tampers are sized to match basket diameter—typically 58 mm for commercial machines. Calibrated tampers click at a set pressure (usually around 30 lbs / 13.6 kg) to ensure repeatable compression. Self-leveling and spring-loaded designs have become popular for reducing technique variability. Uneven tamping creates a path of least resistance through the puck, causing channeling and inconsistent extraction.
