Coffee Types & Grading
Screen Size
A grading measurement based on the physical size of green coffee beans, determined by passing them through metal screens with round perforations measured in 1/64-inch increments. Larger screen sizes generally correlate with higher altitude and denser beans.

Common screen sizes range from 12 (small) to 20 (very large), with specialty-grade Arabica typically falling between screen 15 and 18. In Central American grading, beans above screen 17 may qualify as Supremo or EP (European Preparation). Size sorting ensures uniform roasting because beans of similar dimensions absorb heat at the same rate.
