Sumatra Mandheling refers to coffee grown in the Mandailing Natal and South Tapanuli regencies around the ancient Lake Toba supervolcano in northern Sumatra. The name derives from the Mandailing ethnic group, though it has become a generic market label for northern Sumatran coffee. These coffees are processed using the unique Giling Basah (wet-hulling) method, which produces their signature earthy, herbal, and cedar-like flavor with a heavy, syrupy body and muted acidity. The volcanic soils and equatorial climate produce dense, hard beans despite the relatively moderate elevations. Mandheling is one of the world's most distinctive and recognizable coffee origins, prized for its bold, complex character in dark roasts and espresso blends.
