Espresso
Naked Portafilter
A portafilter with its bottom and spouts removed, exposing the underside of the filter basket during extraction. Also called a bottomless portafilter, it allows visual diagnosis of extraction uniformity.
Em Profundidade
With a naked portafilter, the espresso emerges directly from the basket holes, forming a single converging stream when extraction is even. Uneven puck prep reveals itself as multiple streams, side spurting, or blonding on one edge—problems invisible with a spouted portafilter. Naked portafilters are invaluable training tools for dialing in grind, distribution, and tamping technique. They also eliminate the internal channels of a spouted portafilter, which can retain stale coffee oils and affect flavor. The trade-off is messier workflow when extraction is imperfect.
