Portafilter
The handled, detachable basket holder that locks into an espresso machine's group head and holds the ground coffee during extraction. Standard commercial portafilters are 58 mm in diameter.

Portafilters come in spouted (split into one or two streams) and bottomless (naked) varieties. A bottomless portafilter exposes the basket underside, allowing baristas to visually diagnose extraction issues such as channeling or uneven tamping. Basket sizes range from 7 g single to 22 g triple-shot, and precision baskets with laser-cut holes—such as VST or IMS—improve flow uniformity over stock baskets.
