Coffee Types & Grading

Peaberry

A natural mutation where a coffee cherry develops a single rounded seed instead of the usual flat-sided pair. Peaberries occur in about 5-10% of harvested cherries and are often sorted and sold separately at a premium.

In Depth

Because the single seed receives all the nutrients from the cherry, peaberries are often denser and can roast more evenly due to their spherical shape. Flavor differences are debated, but many roasters report brighter acidity and more concentrated sweetness compared to flat beans from the same lot. Tanzania and Kenya are well-known origins for peaberry offerings.
