The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of Africa's overlooked coffee origins with enormous untapped potential. Coffee grows wild in the eastern provinces of Kivu, where high elevations (1,400-2,000 m) and volcanic soils produce distinctive Arabica with bright acidity and fruity complexity. Despite decades of conflict disrupting the industry, Congolese coffees — particularly from South Kivu's Minova and Kalehe areas — have begun appearing at international specialty auctions, revealing quality comparable to neighboring Rwanda and Burundi.
