Mount Elgon is Uganda's most important Arabica coffee region, spanning the western slopes of the extinct volcano that straddles the Kenya-Uganda border. The mountain's volcanic soils, high elevation, and consistent rainfall create ideal conditions for specialty Arabica, though Uganda is better known globally as Africa's second-largest Robusta producer. Mount Elgon Arabica is known for its bright acidity, medium body, and clean flavors of red fruit, citrus, and brown sugar with subtle wine-like character. The Bugisu and Sebei communities on the mountain slopes have cultivated Arabica for generations, and the region's cooperatives are increasingly targeting specialty markets. Mount Elgon's quality potential is only beginning to be realized as investment in processing infrastructure and farmer training accelerates.
