Panama became a global specialty coffee icon when Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha variety won the Best of Panama auction in 2004 at unprecedented prices. The volcanic highlands of Boquete and Volcán in Chiriquí province, at 1,200-1,900 meters, provide ideal conditions for Geisha and other premium varieties. Panamanian Geisha coffees command the highest prices in the world, known for their explosive jasmine, bergamot, and tropical fruit aromatics with a tea-like body.
